Children in the Pre-Prep have two 30 minute P.E. lessons per week, taught by specialist Games staff. In addition, the Year 2 pupils have a weekly games lesson as well.
The pupils enjoy a fun, varied and focused programme in which gymnastics, dance, athletics, striking and fielding are taught to progress their levels and abilities. There is still a major focus on fundamental movement skills, developing throwing, striking and balancing techniques that are needed in day to day life. The idea of playing within a team is introduced and developed and the skills needed for specific sports are brought in progressively. All areas of the games curriculum are closely linked to the Little Oaks (Early Years Foundation stage) curriculum and to the Prep School curriculum which helps to ensure a smooth and seamless transition between the different stages of your child’s education at Oakwood.
Oakwood pupils enjoy outstanding sports facilities, including tennis and netball courts, a fully equipped gymnasium, extensive playing fields, park and woodland with cross country running and mountain bike tracks and a swimming pool.
Weekly swimming lessons take place all year round in our covered, heated pool. A team of swimming instructors ensure that every child is confident and safe in the water and parents are invited to swimming demonstrations in the summer term each year to see how far their children have progressed. Individual swimming lessons are also available on a private basis if required.
An undoubted highlight of the year for the Pre-Prep is our whole school sports day which takes place in the summer term. This is a joyous celebration of teamwork, confidence and the school house system and the children love taking part. We combine an atmosphere of inclusiveness with some healthy competition and older pupils compete for the ‘Most Promising Male/Female Athlete’ trophies.
