Funtington Community Christmas

Community Events

We have learned that one of the most special ways for us to build community is by contributing to the wider local area. The whole Oakwood family and members of the local community both enjoy and benefit from regular opportunities to come together, whether at Oakwood or having groups of our children out in the community. Our community involvement is varied and a wonderful part of our school life. Regular events and visits include:

  • EYFS care home visits:our youngest pupils visit a local care home and have developed strong bonds with the residents. This is crucial in their development of social skills as well as providing great joy to those in the care home; we value the wisdom and patience of these older members of our wider community.

  • Care home visits to Oakwood: we warmly welcome elderly guests to Nativity plays, Easter concerts, tea parties and more. Our first Summer Tea Party was hosted in our marquee in July 2018 and we look forward to this becoming an annual event.  Over 80 guests joined us for a delicious tea served by our Year 6 leavers and were entertained brilliantly by our Pre-Prep children with songs and dances.

  • Choir events:our choirs act as great ambassadors for the school. They visit our local hospice and several care homes each year in the lead up to Christmas and are always well received. Additionally, they are annually invited to sing at the switching on of Chichester’s Christmas lights and at Goodwood Balls where guests generally donate funds to go to our nominated school charities.

  • Special choral events: we were delighted to be invited to be part of ‘The Armed Man’ commemorative Centenary Concert in Chichester Cathedral. The Oakwood choir received a standing ovation from the professional musicians participating for their talent, poise and commitment - a true testament to our pupils’ desire to give their best.

  • Chichester Festival of Music, Speech and Dance: Oakwood children always enthusiastically participate in the annual Chichester Festival of Music, Speech and Dance. Our children also grasp opportunities to be part of Chichester Youth Theatre.

  • Local competitions and events:we welcome opportunities to participate in local competitions and events including those hosted by the Rotary Club. Every year, we field a team for the nail biting Chichester Corporate Challenge alongside numerous other local schools and Athletics groups.

  • Funtington Community Christmas: in 2018 we opened our doors to host Oakwood’s first Christmas linking with the established and popular Emsworth Community Christmas. Over 60 people sat down for a wonderful Christmas lunch after being entertained by some of our choir members. This event provided a wonderful opportunity for people who might have otherwise been alone on Christmas Day. This day was truly Oakwood at its best and we enjoyed hosting the event again on Christmas Day 2019.
